Heritage towns with a tradition of nearly thousand years situated in the Bohemian-Moravian Borderlands invite history-lovers to come and visit the region.
A true gem for history fans is Litomyšl with its exquisite Renaissance castle, registered as a UNESCO heritage site. The castle in Moravská Třebová merits the greatest attention. It was built on the site of a former castle. Polička is a town, which was earned as the dowry of the Czech queens. The town walls with nineteen semi-circular towers are some of the best preserved fortification systems in Central Europe. Just a few kilometres from Polička is situated the Svojanov Castle, established by Přemysl Otakar II, which is the representative of medieval castles in the region. In Svitavy you can visit the reconstructed town centre with the square with many baroque and Renaissance houses which belongs among the longest double-sided arcaded squares in the Czech Republic. Vysoké Mýto offers you a visit of the largest square-shaped square in the country. The unique Rococo Nové Hrady Castle which is often called "the Czech Versailles" lies near the town of Vysoké Mýto.
