Polička

Polička, once a dowry town of Czech queens, was established by Přemysl Otakar II. in 1265. In the 18th century, Polička belonged among the wealthiest towns of East Bohemia. However, the promising development was often interrupted by overwhelming fires. Following the greatest fire only four houses in the town survived undamaged.

Today, Polička is an attractive tourist destination and it boasts unique, preserved town walls, fortified by nineteen towers. The 1220 m long walls belong among the most preserved of its kind in Central Europe. The impressive atmosphere of the town encircled by a ring of walls is completed by a number of corners with old lanes and houses decorated with classical carved gates. One of the most lavishly decorated Marian columns in Bohemia stands on the square, joined by the baroque town hall and its expositions of the town gallery. The town’s focal point is the Church of St. Jacob, in whose tower the composer Bohuslav Martinů was born and spent part of his childhood. You can also visit the Bohuslav Martinů Centre and its modern exhibitions with interactive features presenting the history of the town and the story of Bohuslav Martinů.

One of the oldest Czech castles belongs to the town - Svojanov Castle. A gothic rooms and an exposition of life in the castle in the 19th century can be found in its Empire style palace. You can accommodate and entertain yourselves, dine or even hold a wedding at the castle. A number of events are held here, especially during the summer holidays.
