The history of the dowry town of Czech queens reaches way back before the 13th century, when it was established by King Přemysl Otakar II. The regular-shaped layout of the town has remained preserved since then. It has a central square, which is the largest square-shaped square in Bohemia. While strolling through the centre, you cannot miss the gothic St. Vavřinec Cathedral, the 16th century belfry, Choceň, Prague or Litomyšl gate. The Vodárenská and Klášterská bastions which are part of the rampart fortifications have been preserved.
The ineffaceable mark of the automotive world was imprinted on the town in the 20th century. During the first half of the 20th century, fame was brought to Vysoké Mýto by the company Carrosseria Sodomka, which belonged to the genial designer and bodybuilder Josef Sodomka. The company’s vehicles celebrated fame in the 30s and 40s all over the world. You can remeber those times when visiting the unique exposition Carroserie Sodomka in the town museum. The automotive present is represented by the bus manufacturer Iveco Czech Republic and the autodrome.
